In 2024, Parent Shield decided to test a hypothesis around the impact of high-dosage literacy intervention to set the stage for broader systemic and policy-level pushes.

Nurturing Minds

#ParentsDoCare

Started by Fort Worth native and Highland Hills neighborhood resident, Trenace Dorsey-Hollins, Parent Shield Fort Worth is a grassroots movement of parents, guardians, caretakers, and community members that strongly believe every child in Fort Worth should receive a high quality education, inclusive of all students; which develops their potential and prepares them to be successful adults.

Our mission is to educate and unite powerful parents to demand a high quality education for all children.

“If we want to improve education in this district, it’s a must that the math and reading outcomes improve. The district needs to focus on recruiting and retaining qualified teachers, and ensuring that all resources are provided to enrich our children’s education. Parents have had to accept this for far too long for our babies, but we are their protection and the first line in their defense. We stand together as the PARENT SHIELD.”

Trenace Dorsey-Hollins, Leader of Parent Shield Fort Worth

At the NewSchools Venture Fund Summit, Trenace Dorsey Hollis shared how her journey as a mother ignited a movement.

What began with one misleading report card and a mother’s refusal to accept “good enough” has grown into Parent Shield Fort Worth, a parent led movement demanding transparency, truth, and equity in education.

In her talk, Trenace powerfully illustrates how families in Fort Worth discovered the gap between grades and reality, how Parent Shield built literacy clinics and the LIFT program to close that gap, and how parents’ voices are now shaping district policy and state priorities.

Her message is clear: literacy is not just about reading, it is about freedom, justice, and the future of every child.
